American Sterling Silver Plate - Antique Circa 1929

£2,195.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique American sterling silver plate; an addition to our dining silverware collection

SKU A4013

This exceptional American sterling silver plate has a plain circular rounded form with a plain circular central well.

The well of this large plate is plain and unembellished.

The broad border is ornamented with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms depicting a Barry of seven above the motto 'Pro Patria Et Legibus' - For our country and the law.

The impressive coat of arms is surmounted by the bright cut engraved helm and crest displaying an armoured arm embowed holding in the hand five arrows, below the motto 'Unite'.

The underside of the plate bears the later engraved presentation inscription 'New York Racing Association, The Correction, AQUEDUCT, 1976, Won by Jaques D Wimpfheimer's Shy Dawn'

The hallmarks struck to the underside of the plate include:

Maker's mark: S Kirk & Son Inc*

Silver quality/purity mark: Sterling (.925, 925/1000)

* This variation of the maker's mark was used between 1925-1932, determining the date of this plate as circa 1929

NOTE: Samuel Kirk opened his own shop in Baltimore, Maryland in 1815 and developed a reputation for sterling silver repoussé work. The company operated under the names Samuel Kirk & Son and S. Kirk & Son, and when taken over in 1979 by the Stieff Company, the company was renamed Kirk Stieff to withhold and capitalise on their glowing prominence.

Date: Circa 1929

This antique American silver plate is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The bright cut engraved coat of arms and inscription are very crisp.

The hallmarks struck to the underside of the plate are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of American silverware.
