AC Silver are pleased to offer a fine range of antique silver pieces by Ellis & Co (Ellis Jacob Greenberg). The company was established by Ellis Jacob Greenberg, who was born in September 1879 into a family of silversmiths. His father, Israel Sigmund Greenberg (a Jewish of Russian origin), was listed as a silversmith in 1884 at 44 Frederick Street, Birmingham and later moved to be I.S. Greenberg & Co to Vyse Street, Birmingham in 1889. At this point Ellis Jacob Greenberg (1879-1931) and Herbert Simeon Greenberg (1881-1966) were a part of the company. In 1909 the firm was converted to a limited liability company under the name I.S. Greenberg & Co Ltd, with members of the Greenberg family being partnered in Ellis & Co, silversmiths and electroplaters. Their work bears many marks across a multitude of assay offices including: Birmingham, London and Chester. The company merged with the prominent company Barker Brothers in the 1960s, with the new firm being named Barker Ellis Silver Co Ltd. After a few further changes this company went into administration in 1992.
