German Sterling Silver Cream Jug - Antique 1902

£1,445.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique German sterling silver novelty cream jug; an addition to our silver teaware collection

SKU A4210

This exceptional antique German sterling silver cream jug has been realistically modelled in the form of an 18th century Frenchman's head.

The embossed body of the jug is embellished with chased decoration replicating the fine details of the gentleman's hair and facial features.

The flared upper portion of the jug is embellished with a simple paralleling border, and the shape pertains to a continental/cocked hat.

This fine Hanau silver cream jug is fitted with a C shaped handle modelled in the form of the male's tied braid.

This novelty antique cream jug retains the original gilded interior which has wear in keeping with age.

The Pseudo hallmarks struck to the underside and import hallmarks to the rim of this impressive jug include:

Maker's mark: Pseudo KKK (Karl Kurz*)

Importer's mark: TH (Theodor Hartmann*)

Silver quality/purity mark: Lion passant (.925 sterling, 925/1000)

Assay mark: Leopard head (London, England)

Import date mark: g (1902)

Additional mark: F (foreign manufacture mark), Hanau hallmarks

* The importer Theodor Hartmann operated from Paternoster Row in London and was the agent for K.Kurz who manufactured items of silverware in Kesselstadt, Germany.

Maker: Karl Kurz

Date: 1902

This antique cream jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The chased and embossed decoration is very sharp.

Full import hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim and the Pseudo hallmarks to the underside are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique silverware.
