Believed to be the oldest existing jewellers, Mellerio was first established in 1613. The jeweller’s is still family-owned today, staking a claim to being the longest-running family jewellers in existence. The family’s first significant patron was Mari de Medici, the reigning queen of France and Navarre in the early 1600s.

In 1777, Mellerio began trading in Versailles. It was here that the head of the family, Jean-Baptiste Mellerio, caught the eye of Marie Antoinette. Enamoured with the jewellery presented by Mellerio, Antoinette became a patron, commissioning many items from the master craftsmen. Empress Josephine Bonaparte, wife to Napoleon, became another patron in 1796. By this point, Mellerio was a name associated with royalty, quality, and luxury. Royal families across Europe boast jewellery pieces with the Mellerio hallmarks.

In 1815, Jean-Baptiste opened a storefront on the Rue de la Paix, which remains the flagship store for the brand today. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1830, Mellerio was a jeweller to King Louis-Philippe and Queen Marie-Amélie. The Spanish, Dutch, Italian, and British royal families all retain jewellery from the renowned maker.

There have been fifteen generations of Mellerio family members leading the company from the 1600s to today. The company have gone to great lengths to preserve 400 years of trade, conserving design sketches and commission paperwork from big names throughout European history.

Today, Mellerio has stores in France, Luxembourg and Japan, cementing an international reputation as a leader in quality luxury jewellery. Owning an item of Mellerio-made jewellery allows one to feel in-touch with the long-standing excellence associated with the name.
