Sterling Silver Presentation Goblet / Cup - Antique Victorian (1874)

£1,695.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Victorian English sterling silver presentation goblet/cup; an addition to our collection of presentation related silverware

SKU C6620

This exceptional antique sterling silver presentation goblet / cup has a circular bell shaped form onto a knopped stem and circular spreading foot.

The body of this exceptional example of Victorian silverware is encompassed with bright cut engraved stemmed wheat and organic designs, incorporating four arched cartouches.

The anterior cartouche bears the original engraved inscription 'The Festival Cup for Horticulture' and the further three contain engraved illustrations of root vegetables: a carrot, a beetroot and a rutabaga.

The embossed knopped pedestal stem is embellished with applied bead decoration.

The foot of this antique silver goblet is ornamented with further bright cut engraved wheat head decoration, in addition to a bead decorated border.

Such antique examples with horticultural illustrations are rare and becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

Maker: Horace Woodward & Co

Date: 1874

This antique 1870s silver goblet is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp and the applied ornamentation is sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the goblet, in addition to part hallmarks to the underside of the foot are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
