This exceptional antique Dutch silver pipe tamper tool has a faceted handpiece with a tongue scraper to the terminal.
The handpiece is embellished with cast and applied festoon decoration to either side, in addition to an engraved decoration.
The plain oval antique tongue scraper* is ornamented to the nadir with four scrolling designs, in conjunction with the stem/handpiece.
This exceptional example of antique silverware incorporates four tamper/pipe blades, secured to one end via an integrated hinge, and once closed can be concealed within the stem.
* Tongue scrapers were popularised across Europe in the mid-ninteeth century and were influenced by the Asian oral care practice. The growing utilisation of this practice led to the creation of the luxury examples including tongue scrubbers, often made from materials such as sterling silver, tortoise shell and carved ivory.
