This exceptional antique sterling silver dish cross* has a plain Regency style form.
Each plain arm of this Georgian dish cross terminates with a plain lobed thumbpiece, surmounting an impressive adjustable cast scrolling leg and splayed lobed foot.
The pierced decorated boss of each leg collars the bar and moves horizontally to allow the frame size to be adjusted to hold either round or oblong dishes.
The plain four spoke frame conjoins at a central circular hinge, incorporating the original spirit burner.
The spirit burner is embellished with bands of tooled decoration, incorporating a bright cut engraved crest.
The rim of the burner is encompassed with a rope twist decorated border.
* The dish cross, often known as a 'spider', was invented in Ireland. The dish cross was utilised in the last half of the 18th century, with the central segment being optimised to hold a spirit burner or candle.
