£2,950.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III Newcastle sterling silver quart tankard made by John Langlands I & John Robertson I; an addition to our Georgian silver tankard collection

SKU C8190

This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver quart* tankard has a plain circular rounded form onto a spreading circular foot.

The body of this sterling silver tankard is embellished with impressive later chased** scrolling leaf decoration accented with floral designs.

The chased decoration incorporates a scroll bordered cartouche to one side, ornamented with an engraved** crest of lion passant above the motto 'Quod Ero Spero' - Hope, Perseverance, Success.

The body of the tankard is further embellished with a plain applied girdle, in addition to bands of tooled decoration.

This Georgian tankard retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover with an impressive cast scrolling thumbpiece.

The cover is further embellished with later chased floral decoration, in addition to leaf textures to the rounded lower portion.

The hinge is decorated with pendant drop style ornamentation to the upper portion of the handle.

This antique sterling silver tankard is fitted with a hallmarked S scroll handle ornamented with an impressive heart shaped decorated terminal.

This exceptional example of Georgian silverware, crafted by the renowned and collectable Newcastle silversmiths John Langlands I & John Robertson I, is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

* Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres

** The later chasing and engraved crest will have been crafted in the Victorian era; this was common practice for plain tankards of this period.

Date: 1791

This antique Georgian lidded tankard is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The later chased decoration is all very sharp and the engraved decoration is crisp.

Full British hallmarks struck to the surface of the tankard, in addition to part hallmarks to the cover and handle are all clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this Georgian tankard.
