The cover and body of this solid silver nutmeg grater are encompassed with impressive bands of linear and undulating pin struck decoration, in a variety of parallel patterns.
The cover of the Georgian silver nutmeg grater incorporates a central cartouche, bordered by further pin struck ornamentation.
The cartouche features the contemporary engraved initials 'MJ' in addition to the engraved date '1794'.
The hinged hallmarked anterior cover opens to reveal the steel grating grille.
The underside of the box bears a secondary hallmarked flush hinged cover which allows access to the grated nutmeg; the flush hinge indicates the high quality of this piece of antique silverware.
The underside of the box is ornamented with wrigglework decorated borders, in addition to further pin struck decoration paralleling the cover's hinge and anterior edge.
