Sterling Silver Porringer and Cover - Antique William III (1689)

£12,045.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique William III English sterling silver porringer with cover; an addition to our 17th century silverware collection

SKU A9021

This exceptional antique William III sterling silver porringer with cover has a plain rounded cylindrical form onto a circular spreading foot.

The lower portion of the body is encircled with an exceptional band of chased alternating leaf designs.

The body is further ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'WSM'.

This cup retains the original hallmarked domed push fit cover embellished with a large chased stylised leaf motif in a swirl design.

The cover is surmounted by an exceptional cast leaf decorated sterling silver bud style finial.

This fine silver porringer with cover is fitted with two exceptional cast and applied S scroll handles.

Early examples in such exceptional condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.

Maker: Roger Grange

Date: 1689

This antique silver porringer with cover is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The chased decoration is all very sharp in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the porringer are very clear; it is rare to see such clear hallmarks on a piece of this age, often they cannot be deeply struck due to the rounded surface.

The part hallmarks to the upper plateau of the cover were struck before the piece was chased therefore the definition of the marks is lost.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
