This exceptional vintage sterling silver tankard has a tapering cylindrical form onto a stepped foot, all in the Arts and Crafts style.
The panelled body of the tankard is embellished with alternating engraved simplified mystical fish decoration and a repeating lozenge style pattern.
Each panel is segmented with an applied pale style border, accented with reed decoration to the vertical pales.
This vintage silver tankard retains the original hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted with an unusual and large cast silver Arts and Crafts style finial, modelled in the form of a three-dimensional fish.
The cover bears a circular stepped design, replicating the style of the foot.
This sterling silver tankard is fitted with an impressive C-shaped handle, ornamented with further engraved lozenge decoration to the handpiece.
The hinge is decorated with a pendant drop style ornamentation in junction with the upper portion of the handle.
Such vessels of this style would be crafted as a mug, it is rare to locate an example incorporating the original lid to create a functional tankard.
