This exceptional antique Chinese Export Silver (CES) cream jug and sugar bowl have a circular rounded form onto a swept foot.
This antique silver bowl and cream jug each have an incurved segmented form accented with cast and applied variations of floral* designs.
These pieces both feature a plain Chippendale style rim, incorporating a plain flared lip to the cream jug.
Each component of this silver jug and bowl set is fitted with silver bamboo stalk handles.
The hallmarks struck to the underside of each Chinese silver piece include:
Maker's mark: WH (WANG HING)
Retailer's mark: TAI CHANG LONG (泰昌隆 [Cantonese TAA COENG LUNG])
Silver quality/purity mark: 90 (.900, 900/1000)
* These floral and foliate designs reflect those seen within Chinese art, known as the Four Gentlemen. They represent the development of the seasons through the year: orchid - spring (春 / chun), bamboo - summer (夏 / xia), chrysanthemum - autumn (秋 / qiu) and plum blossom - winter (冬 / dong).
We are grateful to Adrien von Ferscht for his help in identifying this exceptional antique piece.
