Sterling Silver Cigar Box - Antique Victorian (1896)

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver box has a plain rectangular form with rounded ends.

The surface of this impressive and unusual antique cigar box is plain and embellished with the bright cut engraved crest of an eagle soaring, above the motto 'Ardenter prosequor alis' - On wings I ardently pursue / Eagerly do I pursue in my winged course.

This example of antique silverware is fitted with a hallmarked push fit solid silver cover, which allows access to the unusual secondary hinged opening.

The interior of this exceptional Victorian cigar box retains the original gilding.

This impressive and unusual silver box was crafted by the manager of the Army & Navy Cooperative Society Ltd, Frederick Bradford Macrea.

The box has surface marks in keeping with age and use.
