Sterling Silver Vinaigrette - Antique George III (1805)

£2,250.00

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III English sterling silver Nelson vinaigrette made by John Shaw; an addition to our silver boxes collection

SKU C7908

This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver vinaigrette has a rounded rectangular form.

The surface of the box is plain and unembellished.

The anterior edge of the hinged silver vinaigrette cover incorporates a plain thumbpiece and allows access to the hinged pierced decorated gilt grille.

The pierced decorated hinged grille incorporates a nautical themed design of the ship 'Victory' illustration, in addition to the wording 'Immortal Nelson'*.

The interior of this Georgian silver vinaigrette and grille retains the original gilding.

Such examples are rare and increasingly difficult to locate.

NOTE:* Upon the death of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1805 there were a variety of commemorative/souvenir pieces crafted to celebrate the hero's Royal Navy endeavours. The phrase 'immortal' was often associated with Nelson when when he was alive, however it grew to be a popular word about him after his death.
